Sony Pictures wants Amy Schumer to portray “Barbie” in a live-action movie inspired by the iconic doll.

Generations of Barbie fans around the world fill Mattel’s coffers with more than $3 billion per year. Movie producers are now convinced that 2015’s “Trainwreck” star can add to those profits with a summer 2018 release.

Industry sources told Vanity Fair on Friday that producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal envision a “Barbie” film that “will try to take a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.” The magazine said the story currently involves Ms. Schumer playing a doll that is “expelled” from an idealistic land of toys before venturing off into “the real world.”

Vanity Fair added that Ms. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, will do rewrites on a script provided by Hilary Winston.
Ms. Schumer recently starred in Anheuser-Busch InBev’s “Bud Light Party” campaign featuring actor Seth Rogen. The company ended the television spots weeks early after a decline in third-quarter sales.
