The first report I read said that the scene they were working on had Baldwin in a balcony, and aiming the gun down at people below, but this was a movie set, where they would use camera angles to make it appear as though the actor is pointing the gun at someone, when in reality the gun is not aimed at anyone.

The bottom line is that this was practice, and Alec Baldwin did not have to go through all of the steps that were required to kill Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin didn’t have to cock the gun while practicing a scene. Baldwin didn’t have to aim the now-cocked gun at a human being. Baldwin did not have to pull the trigger of the gun.
